SUMMARY:Special Screening of "Eephus"
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, September 22nd\, at 6:30pm\, at the Adams Academy\, Quincy Historical Society will host a special screening of the 2026 independent film\, “Eephus\,” described as a poignant and humorous exploration of the bonds\, rituals\, and rivalries of New England community rec-league baseball. \nThe title “Eephus” refers to a trick pitch of the same name\, where the pitcher throws a very slow\, high arching ball overhand to deliberately disrupt the batter’s timing. \nDirected by Carson Lund\, “Eephus” follows two New England recreational baseball teams as they gather for one final game on their beloved local field. Filmed in Massachusetts and set in the 1990s\, the story unfolds over the course of a single autumn day\, as longtime teammates and rivals play\, argue\, joke\, and reminisce while the daylight fades. Their field is slated to be demolished to make way for a new school\, giving the seemingly ordinary game an unexpected sense of nostalgia. \nThe film features cameo appearances from legendary Red Sox personalities Bill “Spaceman” Lee and Joe Castiglione\, and from the esteemed documentarian Frederick Wiseman. \nThe film run time is 98 minutes. \nThis event is open to all and free to attend. \nPLEASE NOTE: This film features strong language typical of the bleacher seats at Fenway Park. Viewer discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:"Hancock Cemetery: Alive with History" | Presentation & Book Signing with Local Historian Rachel Squires Bloom
DESCRIPTION:If these stones could speak… \nOn Thursday\, October 29th\, at 7pm\, at the Adams Academy (8 Adams Street)\, Quincy Historical Society will welcome local author Rachel Squires Bloom for a presentation and book signing of her newest publication Hancock Cemetery: Alive with History. \nFour centuries of history are preserved in the weathered headstones of Hancock Cemetery. The “Old Burying Ground” is one of New England’s oldest enduring connections to its Puritan and colonial past. More than a resting place\, this burying ground tells the stories of the people who shaped the town and its place in American history. \nIn Hancock Cemetery: Alive with History\, Bloom places the graveyard in the contexts of Puritan theology\, colonial community life\, and the development of Quincy as a civic and industrial center. This program will explore the cemetery’s rich history through the lives of the farmers\, laborers\, ministers\, merchants\, and civic leaders who lie within\, examining the town’s evolving identity\, and highlighting how the 21st century city preserves and engages with this remarkable artifact. \nThis event is open to all and free to attend. A book signing will follow the presentation. \nRachel Squires Bloom is the author of Squantum School: A Great Place to Start and Squantum\, Massachusetts: Life and Times on the Peninsula. Bloom was a teacher for over two decades within the Quincy Public Schools system\, acting as Assistant Principle at Squantum Elementary School for twelve years. She is working on a series of articles about Annisquam\, Massachusetts and researching the political and cultural influence of the Squantum Women’s Club.
