“Quincy, 1865-1915”

Edward Fitzgerald, Speaker

As a companion piece to Stephen Puleo’s upcoming Annual Meeting talk, Historical Society director Edward Fitzgerald will offer an April 29 program that looks at Quincy’s history during roughly the same era. The period between the Civil War and World War I often gets less attention than earlier and later periods of Quincy history. But it was during this period that many aspects of today’s Quincy took shape. We’ll take an illustrated look at the era’s events and trends, including the change to city government, the new suburban neighborhoods, the changing granite industry and the start of Fore River, and the great tide of European immigrants. And we’ll display some artifacts from these years.

Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge for admission.

Stephen Puleo, " A City So Grand: Boston 1850-1900”

Stephen Puleo, author of Dark Tide and The Boston Italians and one of our most popular speakers, will discuss his just-published book, A City So Grand: The Rise of an American Metropolis, Boston 1850-1900. Puleo’s book chronicles this breathtaking period of Boston’s history for the first time. It covers, among its many topics, the abolitionist movement of the 1850s, the 35-year engineering and planning feat of the Back Bay project, the arrival of the Irish that transformed Boston demographically, the Great Fire of 1872 and subsequent rebuilding of downtown, Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone, and the grand opening of America’s first subway. A City So Grand presents an extraordinary portrait of a half-century that transformed Boston into a world-class city.  A book signing will follow the talk.

Everyone is welcome. Admission is free. Please note that this is a Monday program.
